Why is the Homestead Branch of the Miami-Dade Public Library System (MDPLS) closing?

In 2019, the Homestead City Council and Miami-Dade County Board of County Commissioners voted to establish the Homestead Cybrarium as a municipal library, replacing the existing Homestead Branch Library.  MDPLS will close the existing Homestead Branch, located at 700 N. Homestead Blvd. at close of business, March 20, 2021.

How do I get a Homestead Cybrarium library card?

All Miami-Dade County residents are eligible for a free Cybrarium card account regardless of age. A temporary Cybrarium card can be obtained by applying online. Proof of eligibility will need to be presented in-person at the Cybrarium to obtain a permanent card.

Visitors and or individuals who do not live, own property, work, or attend school in Miami-Dade County, may purchase an annual non-resident Cybrarium card for $65 to enjoy access to all of the Cybrarium’s materials and services.

Will I still be able to use my current Miami-Dade Public Library System (MDPLS) Library card?

Yes. Homestead residents will still be eligible to continue using their MDPLS card at all MDPLS locations.   To obtain a free Miami-Dade Public Library System card, go to ecard.mdpls.org or e-mail MDPLS at customercare@mdpls.org.

Can I use the Miami-Dade Public Library System (MDPLS) library card at the Homestead Cybrarium?

The cards are different, and you will need to apply at both locations.  An MDPLS card will not work at the Cybrarium and vice-versa.

Can residents outside of Homestead apply for a Cybrarium Card?

All Miami Dade County residents can apply for a City of Homestead Library card.  Visitors and or individuals who do not live, own property, work, or attend school in Miami Dade County, may purchase a non-resident Cybrarium card for $65 to enjoy access to all of the Cybrarium’s materials and services for one year.

As a Homestead resident, can I apply for a Miami-Dade Public Library System (MDPLS) library card?

The Miami-Dade Public Library System and the City of Homestead have entered into a reciprocal borrowing agreement which allows the residents of Homestead to apply for a free MDPLS Card for use at MDPLS locations and online at MDPLS.org.

If I currently have items on request for pickup at the Miami-Dade Public Library System (MDPLS) Homestead Branch, where can I pick up those items when they arrive?

After March 20, 2021, MDPLS will be transferring items requested for pickup at the existing MDPLS Homestead Branch to the Naranja Branch Library, located at 14850 Southwest 280th Street. When the Homestead Branch closes, your home branch will automatically be changed to the Naranja Branch. As previously noted, you may contact staff at customercare@mdpls.org to select a different home branch location.

If I check out items at a Miami-Dade Public Library System branch, can I return those items to the Homestead Cybrarium?

Items that are checked out at an MDPLS branch must be returned to a branch of the MDPLS.  The Homestead Cybrarium is not an MDPLS branch.
