Virtual Reality Experiences

The Homestead Cybrarium offers virtual reality (VR) experiences for patrons to immerse themselves in art, travel, history, and science. Virtual reality is a computer generated simulation, allowing the user to experience various environments. Reservations must be made in person at the Cybrarium.

Using VR at the Cybrarium

  • All VR users must have a valid Cybrarium card to use the service at no cost.
  • Guest VR sessions are available for non-cardholders for a fee: $10/person or $30/family.
  • Sessions are for 30 minutes, plus 5 minutes of setup time: a total of 35 minutes.
  • Users must remain seated at all times.
  • The recommended age for VR is 12 years. Users younger than 8 must be supervised by a parent or guardian.

The task you've been given is to find various things that have been hidden inside buildings, behind trees, and inside containers. See if you can find them all!

A Show of Kindness is a three-act VR experience through which the user navigates an unfolding story frozen in time, crafted with meticulous detail by concept artist Peter Chan using a custom build of Tilt Brush.

Antarctic Heritage Trust
New Zealand-based Antarctic Heritage Trust partnered with Auckland University of Technology (AUT) to create a ground-breaking virtual reality experience of Sir Edmund Hillarys Antarctic hut. A fully immersive experience, which includes a guided tour through the hut, it celebrates what Hillarys 23-man team achieved in their mission to further science and exploration in the worlds most extreme environment. The Trust recently finished conservation work on the building and is pleased to be able to share this iconic part of Antarctic history and important cultural heritage site with people around the world. This virtual reality experience celebrates New Zealands first presence in Antarctica as part of the Trans-Antarctic Expedition and International Geophysical Year and shares what life was like on the ice. Beyond the Walls blends photoreal imagery of artworks from SAAMs collection with augmented elements to let users interact with and learn about the museums collection using a headset and handheld controller.BEYOND THE WALLS AT THE SMITHSONIAN AMERICAN ART MUSEUM, this virtual museum includes three unique pieces for users to engage with, leading to a broader, interactive experience of the original art pieces. Users are able to move freely around the museums east wing from inside their headsets, and view a dozen paintings, four works of sculpture, and one video art installation in high fidelity.
